VERBAL REASONING

Verbal Reasoning Tips —
& Strategies

Verbal Reasoning gives you just 21 minutes for 44 questions, making it the most time-pressured subtest in the UCAT. Learn the flag-and-move technique, keyword scanning, and how to confidently tackle true/false/can't tell items so you never waste seconds on a single passage.

The Flag-and-Move Technique

With roughly 28 seconds per question, dwelling on a difficult passage is the fastest way to lose marks elsewhere. The flag-and-move technique means you give every question one honest attempt, select your best answer, flag it for review, and move on immediately. This ensures you see every question in the subtest before the timer runs out.

When you return to flagged items during your remaining time, you often find the answer clicks more quickly because your brain has continued processing the passage in the background. Practise this habit during every timed mock so it becomes automatic on test day at the Pearson VUE centre.

A useful rule of thumb is to flag any question that takes longer than 35 seconds. If you have not committed to an answer by that point, pick the option you are leaning toward, flag it, and continue. Even a well-reasoned guess is better than leaving questions unanswered.

Keyword Scanning for Faster Reading

Reading every word of a 300-word passage before looking at the questions wastes precious time. Instead, read the question stem first, identify the key terms, and then scan the passage for those terms or their synonyms. This targeted approach lets you locate the relevant sentence in seconds rather than minutes.

Watch out for paraphrasing. The UCAT ANZ often restates passage information using different vocabulary, so you need to match meaning rather than identical words. Building a habit of underlining or mentally noting synonyms during practice will sharpen this skill.

Combine keyword scanning with paragraph-level skimming: read the first sentence of each paragraph to understand the passage structure, then dive into the specific paragraph that matches your keywords. This two-step approach balances speed with comprehension.

Mastering True / False / Can't Tell Logic

The most common pitfall in VR is confusing 'False' with 'Can't Tell'. A statement is False only when the passage directly contradicts it. If the passage simply does not mention the topic, or if the statement goes beyond what the passage says, the correct answer is Can't Tell.

Avoid bringing in outside knowledge. Even if you know a statement is factually true in the real world, you must answer based solely on the information provided in the passage. The UCAT is testing your reasoning about written evidence, not your general knowledge.

Practise by covering the answer options, reading the statement, and asking two sequential questions: (1) Does the passage address this topic? If no, the answer is Can't Tell. (2) If yes, does the passage support or contradict the statement? This structured decision tree reduces errors under pressure.

Building a VR Practice Routine

Start with untimed practice to build accuracy, then gradually introduce time pressure. Aim to complete full 44-question VR sets within 21 minutes during the final weeks of your preparation. Tracking your accuracy by question type helps you identify whether True/False/Can't Tell or free-text inference questions need more attention.

Review every incorrect answer by re-reading the passage and pinpointing the exact sentence that supports the correct option. This review process strengthens the neural pathways you need for rapid evidence identification on test day.

Consistency matters more than marathon sessions. Thirty minutes of focused VR practice each day over six weeks produces better results than cramming several hours the night before your UCAT sitting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions

How many questions are in UCAT Verbal Reasoning?+

The UCAT ANZ Verbal Reasoning subtest contains 44 questions to be completed in 21 minutes. That works out to approximately 28 seconds per question, which includes time for reading the passage and selecting your answer.

What is the difference between False and Can't Tell in UCAT VR?+

A statement is 'False' when the passage directly contradicts it. 'Can't Tell' applies when the passage does not provide enough information to determine whether the statement is true or false. The key distinction is that False requires explicit contradictory evidence in the text, while Can't Tell means the passage is silent or ambiguous on the point.

Should I read the whole passage before answering VR questions?+

Most high scorers recommend reading the question stem first, identifying keywords, and then scanning the passage for relevant information. This targeted approach is faster than reading the entire passage upfront, especially given the tight 21-minute time limit across 44 questions.

How can I improve my UCAT VR speed?+

Focus on keyword scanning rather than full reading, use the flag-and-move technique to avoid getting stuck, and practise under timed conditions regularly. Start with untimed practice to build accuracy, then progressively reduce your allowed time until you can complete sets within the 21-minute allocation.
