ELIGIBILITY
Not sure if you need to sit the UCAT? Here is everything you need to know about eligibility, identification requirements, and which Australian and New Zealand medical programs require a UCAT score.
The UCAT ANZ is required for entry into most undergraduate-entry medical, dental, and clinical science programs at Australian and New Zealand universities. If you are a Year 12 student (or Year 13 in New Zealand) applying for one of these programs, you almost certainly need to sit the UCAT.
The UCAT is also used by some universities for other health science programs, though medicine and dentistry are the primary programs requiring it. Students applying to graduate-entry medical programs generally sit the GAMSAT instead, not the UCAT.
To be eligible to register for UCAT ANZ 2026, you must be applying for entry to a UCAT ANZ Consortium university for the 2027 admissions cycle. You should have completed, or plan to complete, Year 12 in Australia (or Year 13 in New Zealand) by the end of the current academic year.
There is no upper age limit for sitting the UCAT, and there is no minimum age requirement. International students who hold the correct visa status and plan to apply to a UCAT ANZ Consortium university are also eligible. You can sit the UCAT multiple times across different years, but only one attempt per testing cycle is permitted.
On test day, you must bring valid, unexpired photo identification to the Pearson VUE test centre. Accepted forms of ID include a passport, driver's licence, or national identity card. The name on your ID must exactly match the name used during registration — any discrepancy may prevent you from sitting the exam.
If you are under 18 and do not have a driver's licence or passport, check the UCAT ANZ website for alternative accepted identification. A school-issued ID card may be accepted in some circumstances, but this should be confirmed with Pearson VUE before your test date.
In Australia, universities that require or accept the UCAT for undergraduate medicine include: the University of New South Wales, the University of Western Australia, the University of Adelaide, the University of Newcastle, Curtin University, Western Sydney University, Charles Sturt University, the University of Tasmania, and Bond University. The full and current list is maintained on the UCAT ANZ Consortium website.
In New Zealand, the University of Auckland and the University of Otago use the UCAT for their medical and dental programs. Each university may weight the UCAT differently in its overall admissions process — some use it as a filter, others combine it with ATAR and interview scores.
Note that universities which require the GAMSAT (such as the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, and Flinders University) do not require the UCAT. If you are unsure which exam you need, check your target university's admissions page or see our UCAT vs GAMSAT comparison.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
If you are applying for an undergraduate-entry medical program at a UCAT ANZ Consortium university, yes. Most major Australian universities that offer undergraduate medicine require a UCAT score as part of the admissions process.
No. There is no minimum or maximum age to sit the UCAT. However, most candidates are Year 12 students aged 17 or 18. Mature-age students applying for undergraduate medicine can also sit the UCAT if their target university requires it.
You can only sit the UCAT once per testing cycle (once per year). However, you can sit the exam in multiple years if you need to reapply. Your most recent UCAT score is the one used for that admissions cycle.
You need valid, unexpired photo identification such as a passport, driver's licence, or national identity card. The name on your ID must exactly match the name on your UCAT registration. Without correct ID, you will not be permitted to sit the exam.
